Nineteen people died and six others were injured when a bus crashed on a road in the state of Zacatecas this Saturday, after the passenger bus they were traveling in was involved in a traffic accident that subsequently led to the vehicle going off the road.
State authorities reported that the bus belongs to the company Ómnibus and was traveling from Tepic, Nayarit, to Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua. They also detailed that six people were injured and are receiving medical attention at Clinic Number 1 of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS).
The accident occurred in the early hours of the morning when the bus transporting the victims collided with the rear of a trailer carrying corn, which had become detached.
Juan Mariquez, the coordinator of the National Guard in the state, stated that the accident happened when «a tractor-trailer lost its second trailer, loaded with corn, and the bus could not control its movement and unfortunately overturned onto its right side.»
The crashed bus is from the company Ómnibus de México, which was coming from Tepic and heading to Ciudad Juárez.
Rodrigo Reyes, Secretary General of the Government, reported that the state government has made available the phone number 492 131 3055, which family and friends of those traveling on the bus can call for more information.
As a result of this accident, traffic on the Zacatecas-Aguascalientes highway has been closed since early morning.
After joint efforts between security forces, the Attorney General’s Office, and the involved civil protection coordinations, it has been confirmed that 25 people were traveling from Tepic to Ciudad Juárez on the bus that suffered the accident.
The first responders and health services recorded a preliminary number of deceased individuals. However, after rescue operations and forensic work conducted at the scene, the confirmed number is unfortunately 19 people. The list will be published gradually as the Attorney General’s Office can identify them.
The following six individuals are receiving care at a hospital in the capital of Zacatecas, and their health status varies from serious to critical: Carlos Eduardo Pérez Delgado, Enrique Paredes Ruiz, Gustavo Adolfo Maciel, Esaú Natanel Piña Casas, Alondra Rodríguez Mariscal, and Guillermo Padilla Ávila.
