Guadalupe, Zacatecas – Pepe Saldívar, the Municipal President of Guadalupe, recently inspected the construction of a rainwater harvesting pond in the Tacoaleche ejido, located near the border of Guadalupe and Vetagrande municipalities. This project aims to improve water utilization in the region.
During his field visit, Saldívar highlighted the threefold benefit of the initiative. The constructed pond will serve to collect rainwater, provide a watering hole for livestock, and establish an irrigation system, a crucial need for the area.
The water harvesting pond will feature a geomembrane lining, a key component that will significantly extend the water’s retention time, allowing for greater efficiency in its use.
This collaborative effort involves a tripartite partnership between the Government of Zacatecas, the Guadalupe City Council, and local producers. The state government is providing machinery, the municipality of Guadalupe is contributing the machine operating hours, and the producers are supplying the necessary fuel.
This cooperative approach has also facilitated the dredging of other water storage ponds in the area, benefiting both livestock and irrigation activities.
Furthermore, Guadalupe has seen advancements in aquaculture, with the Government of Zacatecas providing fish for producers’ self-sufficiency. This initiative supports both personal consumption and offers an economic alternative through the sale of harvested tilapia.
The Guadalupe City Council reaffirms its commitment to local producers by actively seeking various forms of support to foster positive outcomes and contribute to the local economy.
