The Secretary General of Government, Rodrigo Reyes Mugüerza, highlighted that the state is experiencing a significant reduction in high-impact crimes; specifically in intentional homicide, Fresnillo has 61 cases in the current year, which represents a decrease of more than 50 percent compared to 2023, and in the capital of Zacatecas, a decrease of more than 70 percent.
As of July 24, the number in El Mineral is 162 events less than in 2023; 292 fewer cases than in 2022, and 592 fewer than in 2021.
Despite the fact that the National Urban Public Safety Survey (ENSU), conducted by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), places Fresnillo as the municipality with the highest perception of insecurity, the statistics show a significant reduction in the crime of intentional homicide in this area.
In the case of the capital of Zacatecas, the 2024 record is 18 homicides, which represents a 72 percent decrease compared to 2023, when there were 108 homicides; in 2022 there were 240, and in 2021 the total was 226.
The reduction at the state level is 55 percent, with 298 homicides this year and 1,058 in 2023.
Reyes Mugüerza explained that, despite these data, the INEGI survey shows only a slight decrease in the perception of insecurity. In the case of Fresnillo, the data shows a slight correlation between the decrease in intentional homicides and the perception of insecurity, up to 2022; this reached its peak in 2023, but in this quarter it is below the levels of 2018.
In the capital of Zacatecas, there was a notable decrease in the perception of insecurity, from the last quarter to this one, with a 5 percent reduction, an improvement attributed to the sports, cultural, and artistic activities promoted in the Agenda for Peace, focused on the reconstruction of the social fabric.
In this regard, Reyes Mugüerza established that the Peacebuilding Table will continue its efforts to reduce violence rates and improve the perception of security in the region.
