The Government of Zacatecas and the Valparaíso Municipality presented the Premio Arte Wixárika Valparaíso 2025. The award recognizes the talent and tradition preservation of the indigenous Wixárika people, strengthening cultural identity.
Top honors go to Fabián de la Cruz
Fabián de la Cruz de la Cruz earned the Best Piece Galardón for his embroidered bag, “El nacimiento del peyote.” The work, which symbolizes spiritual meaning, was granted an economic prize of 14,000 pesos.
Luisa de la Cruz García won the Jewelry category. Ortencia López Félix took first place in Embroidery. Daniel Alejandro Carrillo Candelario was the top artist in the Representative Figures category.
Award promotes indigenous economic growth
Deputy Secretary César Sánchez Barajas led the ceremony on behalf of the Secretary of Economy. He underscored the state’s commitment to promote indigenous art to strengthen the economic stability of the artisan communities.
Valparaíso Mayor María Guadalupe Ortiz Robles praised the artisans’ dedication. Wixárika art, she noted, conveys the history and spirituality of the people. This Premio Arte Wixárika Valparaíso is a tribute to their legacy.
Maintaining ancestral techniques
Second-place winners included Alicia García de la Cruz and Ilda Lara de la Torre. Their pieces, like the morral “Camino del águila sagrada,” reflect the ancestral techniques and powerful symbolism of the Wixárika worldview.
